Renewing in the UK
- Apply online via the GOV.UK passport service, or by paper form at a Post Office.
- You will need a digital photo, a payment card, and your old passport.
- Most renewals arrive within about 3 weeks.
A few things to check first
- Many destinations require your passport to be valid for 3 to 6 months beyond your travel dates. Renew early.
- Renewing avoids the in-person execution fee that first-time applicants pay.
- Keep your old passport until the new one arrives. Do not book non-refundable travel against a passport you have already sent off.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my US passport online?
Yes. The State Department's online renewal system is live in 2026 for eligible adults applying for routine service. If you qualify, you keep your most recent passport rather than mailing it in. If you are not eligible, you can still renew by mail on Form DS-82.
Who can renew instead of applying in person?
In the US you can renew on Form DS-82 if your most recent passport was issued in the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older, is undamaged, and is in your current name. If any of those is not true, you must apply in person on Form DS-11.
How much does it cost to renew a US passport?
An adult passport book renewal is 130 dollars, with no execution fee, because that 35 dollar fee only applies to in-person, first-time applications. Expedited service adds 60 dollars, and faster return shipping is an optional extra of around 22 dollars.
How long does a passport renewal take?
In the US, routine service runs about 4 to 6 weeks and expedited about 2 to 3 weeks, not counting mailing time. In the UK, renewals usually arrive within about 3 weeks. If you are traveling soon, look at expedited or urgent appointment options.
How much does it cost to renew a UK passport?
Following the April 2026 fee update, renewing online costs 102 pounds and the paper form costs 115.50 pounds for an adult applying from within the UK. Fast Track and Premium services are available if you need it sooner.
