How to Get a Student Visa

How to get a student visa: what you need to qualify, the funds you must show, and worked examples for studying in the US, the UK, and Europe.

May 7, 20261 min read

A student visa rests on three pillars: a place at a recognized school, enough money to live and study, and health coverage. Get those lined up and the rest is paperwork.

The usual sequence

  1. 1

    Get accepted

Secure admission and the enrollment document your school issues.
  2. 2

    Show your funds

Prove you can cover tuition plus living costs for the required period.
  3. 3

    Pay the required fees

Such as the SEVIS fee for the US, plus the visa fee.
  4. 4

    Apply and attend any interview

    Submit the application and biometrics.
  5. 5

    Arrive and register

Enroll and complete any local registration.

  • Check work limits before relying on a part-time job to fund your stay.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to qualify for a student visa?

Three things almost everywhere: acceptance at a recognized institution, proof you can cover tuition and living costs, and health coverage. You also need to show genuine intent to study. The school usually issues a document confirming your enrollment, which you present when you apply.

How does the US F-1 student visa work?

After a school admits you, it issues a Form I-20. You pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, which is 350 dollars as of 2026, then apply for the visa with the DS-160 form. The visa application fee is 185 dollars, plus a 250 dollar visa integrity fee introduced in late 2025. You prove funds covering the first year, with the amount set by your school.

How much money do I need for a UK student visa?

For 2026 you must show living costs of 1,529 pounds a month if studying in London or 1,171 pounds a month outside London, for up to 9 months, on top of unpaid tuition. The funds have to sit in your account for 28 consecutive days ending shortly before you apply.

Can I work on a student visa?

Often part-time, with limits that vary. In Spain, students in higher education can work up to 30 hours a week since 2025 if it does not clash with studies. The UK allows limited term-time work for many students. Always confirm the exact hours your visa permits before taking a job.

How do I prove I can afford to study abroad?

With bank statements, scholarship letters, or sponsor documents showing enough to cover tuition plus living costs for the period required. Some countries want the money held for a set number of days. Check the exact figure and holding period for your destination, as both change.
