How to Get a Digital Nomad Visa
How digital nomad visas work: who qualifies, the income you need to show, and which countries make it easiest to live abroad while working remotely.
A digital nomad visa lets you live in a country while you keep working remotely for clients or an employer somewhere else. It is one of the fastest-growing legal routes to living abroad.
Who qualifies
- You work remotely for companies or clients outside the host country.
- You can prove a steady income above the country's threshold.
- You have private health insurance and a clean criminal record.
The usual sequence
- 1
Confirm you meet the income threshold
Each country sets its own, usually tied to its minimum wage. - 2
Gather your proof
Contracts, recent bank statements, and proof your work is based abroad. - 3
Buy qualifying health insurance
Private cover valid in the host country. - 4
Apply at the consulate or in-country
Submit documents, pay the fee, and give biometrics. - 5
Collect your permit and register locally
Then set up your residency once you arrive.
How the income thresholds compare
Figures are illustrative for 2026 and move with each country's minimum wage, so treat them as a guide and confirm before applying.

| Spain | ~2,850 EUR / month | 200% of the minimum wage |
| Portugal (D8) | ~3,680 EUR / month | 4x the minimum wage |
| Cyprus | ~3,500 EUR / month net | Annual cap of 500 permits |
| Croatia | ~3,620 EUR / month | Up to 18 months, no path to residency |

Tips before you apply
- Show more than the minimum where you can. Thresholds rise yearly and some consulates expect a buffer.
- Check whether the time counts toward permanent residency if that is your goal.
- Some programs, like Cyprus, cap the number of permits, so apply early in the year.

Frequently asked questions
What income do I need for Spain's digital nomad visa?
Spain ties it to the minimum wage. You generally need to show around 200% of the national minimum wage, which works out to roughly 2,850 euros a month as of 2026. The figure rises whenever the minimum wage does, and you add a percentage on top for each family member who joins you.
What is the income requirement for Portugal's digital nomad (D8) visa?
Portugal asks for about 4 times its minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage at 920 euros, that is roughly 3,680 euros a month. Authorities apply the threshold in force at your appointment date, not when you file, and the minimum wage usually rises each year, so build in a margin.
Can a digital nomad visa lead to permanent residency?
Often, but not always. In Spain and Portugal the time you spend on the visa typically counts toward the 5 years needed for permanent residence. Some programs do not count: Croatia's digital nomad stay, for example, does not lead to permanent residency. Check the specific rule before you rely on it.
Do I have to work for a foreign company?
Yes, that is the core idea. Digital nomad visas are for people who earn from employers or clients based outside the host country. You usually cannot take a local job on this visa, and you will need to prove your income comes from abroad.
